Officers stopped and searched about 7,000 drivers and seized more than £30,000 in cash and more than 8,000 phones as part of the Operation Safer Roads. Last year, more than one in five motorists admitted to using their phones while driving, according to the government’s official Road Safety Awareness Report. Operation Safer Roads was part of the national 888 campaign, which targets motor vehicle offences with the aim of reducing death and serious injury on the roads. The operation, which started on Thursday last week and finished today, was supported by road policing officers from West Midlands Police. It involved three separate phases targeting drivers who were using their mobile phones in different ways, while they were driving. During the first phase, a spike in the number of drivers, from Thursday to Friday, using their phones while driving, officers began to target drivers using mobile phones without hands-free kits. Those who stopped and searched were handed fines of up to £1,000, given a four-month licence disqualification and had their vehicles seized. About 160 drivers stopped and searched had mobile phones with hands-free kits. During the second phase, officers dealt with drivers who were using their phones while they were in traffic. From Saturday until Monday, officers stopped and searched drivers in 40 different locations and handed out more than 450 fines totalling £1,865. Officers also searched more than 1,000 vehicles and seized 1,330 mobile phones. In the final phase, officers searched drivers for specific offences, including driving while using a hand-held device. During this phase, about 1,100 motorists were stopped and searched and £1,000 was seized. All the money was taken back to the office, while the phones were confiscated and will be handed in to the mobile network providers. The money and phones will then be handed back to the drivers to pay off their fines. The aim of the 888 campaign is to make roads safer and to reduce the number of casualties. West Midlands Assistant Chief Constable Paul Workman, Deputy Chief Constable for Operations, said: “This operation targeted those who drive with the use of a hand-held mobile phone, without a hands-free kit and/or use their ac619d1d87
